Don't Rely on a Single Platform or Single Income Source | Remote Tech Steward Startup Weekly (14)
Hi, I’m Xianmin, your Remote IT Concierge, and this is my startup weekly journal.
This Week’s Reflections
Last week, my girlfriend’s social media account was banned by TikTok for 15 days without any reason, resulting in zero income for half a month.
This incident made me reflect: if my freelancing channels disappeared, would my income be affected? This is exactly why I maintain multiple platforms, multiple accounts, and publish content through various channels. Even in the worst-case scenario where I can’t use WeChat, my existing clients could still find me through my personal website. This might be one of the benefits of having a personal website - it serves as our individual’s home base on the internet for connecting with others, unrestricted by any platform. (If you need help building a personal website, feel free to contact me!)
Years ago, I realized that relying solely on job income has very low risk resistance. Once you lose your job, you lose your income source. From my observations, individuals with high risk resistance usually have multiple income streams. Of course, the principle is simple and clear, but how should we implement it?
Proactive outreach never goes out of style. A blind friend of mine opened a massage parlor in Xi’an. To attract customers, he went to parking lots and left self-recommendation letters on cars one by one. On the first day, he successfully converted one customer.
Exposing yourself wherever possible is a form of proactive outreach. This includes mass messaging in group chats, broadly distributing self-recommendation letters, and so on. The only reason we haven’t done this yet is that we haven’t been pushed to a dead end. Anxiety is meaningless - better to post one article on Xiaohongshu every day.
The Importance of Client Maintenance
After freelancing for a while, I’ve discovered that existing clients are truly valuable resources. They not only bring continuous business but also refer new clients.
This week, an existing client asked me to help solve a problem. Without much discussion, he directly transferred 300 yuan via WeChat. The entire process took me less than two hours - this kind of efficiency is hard to achieve on any platform.
Conclusion
On the entrepreneurial journey, security often comes from diversified income sources.
Just as farmers don’t plant only one crop and investors don’t buy only one stock, we as tech entrepreneurs cannot rely on a single platform or single skill.
Diversification not only reduces risk but also brings more possibilities.
Are your income sources diversified? Are your skills diversified?
Let’s encourage each other.
